Being an AI UX/UI Leader…

Being an AI UX/UI Design Lead for AI-driven applications comes with interesting technical challenges, such as designing intuitive user experiences for complex, unpredictable AI outputs. Unlike traditional software, AI models generate dynamic and sometimes unexpected results, requiring interfaces that guide users while maintaining transparency and trust. Therefore, ensuring explainability—where users understand why AI made a certain decision—while keeping the design clean and simple is a key challenge. Additionally, handling real-time interactions, optimizing performance for large AI computations, and addressing ethical concerns like bias and fairness in AI-generated content are critical for intuitive design. Here are a few ways my team and I have incorporated user experience best practices into the development of many client AI-powered products:

Establishing UX within AI

  • User Interviews and Research

Conducting interviews with users and stakeholders followed by affinity clustering exercises, gave us insights into similar perceptions of the functionality, suggestions and thought processes.

  • Sketches and Ideation

Creating concept sketches and rough prototypes helps to make sure we are able to address pain points and bright spots for users while still keeping in mind stakeholder priorities before getting too deep into the design process.

  • Testing and Validation

Testing designs with users and stakeholders for feedback before deployment ensures we meet user goals and mitigate development blocks or slowdowns.

I think it's much more accessible…It just kind of gets the user right into the mix of what they're interested in…”

“My feedback is I love it when things don't make me think. This is really good at not making me need to think or wonder what this means. All these drop downs are self-explanatory and that makes sense in my mind.”
